Outlander Season 3, Episode 1 ratings: A look back on the anniversary
Two years ago today, Outlander Season 3 premiered for the first time. Here’s a look back at the ratings coming off the back of a long Droughtlander.
After a 14-month-long Droughtlander, Outlander returned with its third season. Premiering two years ago today, “The Battle Joined” quickly proved that the wait was worth it. It also proved the wait wasn’t detrimental to the series, which we’ll see with a look back at the ratings for the show.
The series was renewed for two seasons in June 2016. It wouldn’t be until September 2017 that we’d finally get to see the first of those two seasons, with the Outlander Season 3, Episode 1 premiering on Sept. 10.

However, in that time, the show did head to Netflix in various parts of the world. This helped to build a new audience base, leading to new subscribers on the service. At the same time, the news of the series spread around the United States, helping to boost the figures around the country.
Like in previous seasons, such as the first season which we’re still looking back at, the live ratings don’t include the STARZ subscribers. That information isn’t available to the public unless STARZ chooses to share it. The live ratings are only recorded based on those who watch it at 8 p.m. on live TV, whether through a cable package or through something like Hulu.
How did Outlander Season 3, Episode 1 perform? According to TV Series Finale, it did see a drop in the key demo compared to the Season 2 premiere. However, the total audience (which is the most important ratings for a premium cable network) did increase.
The ratings were up in both figures when compared to the Season 2 finale, which is considered one of the strongest finales ever on TV. It would start off the season positively.
