Outlander Season 2 gave us episodes of Jamie dealing with PTSD. Why didn’t Fergus deal with the same after his run-in with Black Jack Randall?
When we started Outlander Season 2, there was a lot of focus on Jamie’s PTSD from the events with Black Jack Randall. Towards the middle of the season, Fergus was the one to suffer at the hands of the English Redcoat, but he wouldn’t suffer from PTSD in the same way.
One thing the show and the books have done is show characters as their own people. That’s exactly what happened in the case of Fergus. He did have PTSD but in his own way, in a way that wouldn’t necessarily come across as PTSD. Fergus suffered from nightmares, the type that would wake Claire in the middle of the night and give her chance to learn the truth.

While Fergus didn’t react the same way as Jamie afterward, it doesn’t mean he didn’t suffer. In a way, Jamie’s attack was harsher and deeper. It was more psychological than the attack on Fergus, which would have played a lot more in the reaction afterward.
Fergus was able to bounce back almost, at least in the light of date. Jamie was at the point of suicidal from the shame, guilt, and fear of the events that happened.
It didn’t take Fergus as long to open up about it. Not only did Jamie find Black Jack Randall, but Fergus was able to open up to Claire without a lot of pushing. He found comfort in her as a mother, not feeling the need to deal with the shame that Jamie felt.
We get the different ways characters react during and after events. Fergus did suffer from some PTSD, but not on the same level as Jamie. That doesn’t mean he didn’t react right, but he reacted the way that suited his situation and his personality.
