Outlander Season 1 introduced us to Rupert and Angus. Not technically part of the books, they became the best invention for the show ever.
While there are many occasions book fans want the story of Outlander to remain true to the book, there are times that invention is necessary. There are times that invention that leads to some excellent characters, storylines, and moments. One of the best inventions has to be Rupert and Angus.
They’re not technically part of the books. Sure, the two characters were included in their own ways, but they weren’t the duo that they became within the show. As a TV show, it was all the more better for them.

Angus and Rupert thought of things together that nobody else would. There’s a moment in “Wentworth Prison” when Claire and Murtagh are trying to find a way to get to Jamie. They fail, but the Dynamic Duo figures out that a way through playing poker with the guards. If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t have had that quick scene, and quick scenes like this were necessary to develop the books into a TV series.
The two also managed to offer some comedic relief to the series. The books and show have some heavy material, especially when it comes to the end of the first season. While the books get away with some slower moments mixed in the drama, TV shows don’t work that way.
TV shows need to have drama in each episode and the episodes need to build up throughout. That means little time for dips when it comes to heavier material, which is where the comedic relief from the odd one-liners and their antics come in.
While the two started as foes to Claire, you knew that they would become friends. In fact, they would become like brothers, in a way—the type of people that you love despite all the bad or questionable things they can do.
We also saw how they were brothers to each other. They had each other’s back every step of the way. Where one would go, the other would. It was a beautiful bond between them, and nothing was the same for Rupert when he didn’t have Angus by his side.
Without the two of them, the TV show wouldn’t have been the same. They both got some excellent development as friends that would become loyal friends to Jamie and Claire.
