Why The Girlfriend Experience’s renewal is the best news for Outlander
STARZ renewed The Girlfriend Experience for a third season. This is great news for Outlander’s future and here’s a look at why.
During the STARZ TCAs in July, a few shows received renewals or news about actors joining spin-offs. The Girlfriend Experience was one of those shows renewed. While, initially, you may not think about it, the renewal news is excellent for Outlander‘s future.
Let’s first just look at the live ratings. The Girlfriend Experience is the fifth most popular show on STARZ in terms of both the key demo and total audience. Outlander is the second most popular behind Power.

And the figures are actually fairly large. The Girlfriend Experience Season 2 came in at 0.259 million people and 0.06 in the demo compared to Outlander Season 4 coming in at 1.041 million people and 0.17 in the demo. If STARZ is willing to renew a show with the lower live ratings, there’s little to worry about when it comes to Outlander for now.
After all, STARZ doesn’t rely on live ratings. The live viewer ratings are more for the advertisers. STARZ relies on the subscriber figures. Despite lower live ratings, The Girlfriend Experience must have good subscriber figures and we know that STARZ is happy with Outlander‘s. If the live ratings are anything to judge, we can assume that more people watch Outlander than The Girlfriend Experience.
At the same time, both shows are aimed at the female audience. Despite what Jeffrey Hirsch said, it’s clear that STARZ is aiming for a female audience. Viewers have different expectations and needs from shows. There needs to be a variety, which means just because The Girlfriend Experience clearly works, all shows can’t be the same. This is where the need for a show like Outlander comes in.
There’s enough room on STARZ’s subscription service for more shows. We should celebrate when current shows are getting renewed, especially those with a lower live viewer base than Outlander. It offers us hope that our show will be renewed in the future.
