There are high chances you’re looking for something to help you get through Droughtlander. Veronica Mars is a show Outlander fans should consider.
Droughtlander is long and hard. We’re getting very little from the cast and crew about Outlander Season 5, and it’s important to immerse ourselves in other universes and works of fiction. Veronica Mars is something that Sassenachs might want to consider.
I think this is going to be more for those who like Brianna more than the Claire & Jamie-only fans. I only say that because the lead character, Veronica, can be an acquired taste. She’s unapologetically flawed, which makes her far more human than many other lead females on TV from past and now. There are times you’ll scream at her, but then other times you’ll love her.

While Veronica Mars is set in the modern-day and doesn’t involve fantasy, it’s a series that does connect to some of Outlander. You’ve got the strong lead female, who manages to figure out problems and isn’t afraid to stand up to men twice her age and with a whole lot more power. Her view of the world is skewed by her experience as a private eye. After all, she’s spent most of her teen years looking out for cheaters and dealing with hostile divorces.
There are four seasons to the show, with the first three the standard length for a primetime TV drama. However, you can certainly jump straight into the revival, and I would recommend this for many Sassenachs. The revival doesn’t require any knowledge of the first three seasons or the movie. Everything you will need to know is covered in the voiceovers.
And yes, there are voiceovers. Veronica narrates the series, telling her story and sharing more details about the cases she’s on. For those who love Claire’s voiceovers in Outlander, you’re going to enjoy this part of Veronica Mars.
The revival is more adult. The first three seasons take place while Veronica is in high school and there is the usual teen drama mixed in with the mysteries. The revival takes place 20 years later, which means Veronica is far more grown-up. It also focuses more on just Veronica, Logan, and Keith (Veronica’s father) instead of all the extra side characters. Those who like the contained focus on a handful of characters will enjoy this element.
No, it’s not Outlander. At no point does Veronica Mars try to be Outlander. That’s the whole point! You get a different fictional world, a story with a strong and independent woman who does have some morally grey areas in her personality. If that sounds like something you could enjoy, I highly recommend the series during Droughtlander.
