Outlander fans are looking for new shows to get through Droughtlander. Could Hulu’s Four Weddings and a Funeral series be something to watch?

With Droughtlander a little longer than we’d hoped, Outlander fans around the world are looking for ways to bide the time. Four Weddings and a Funeral is the reboot on Hulu that could be perfect for some.

If you’re worried about this being a rehash of the 1994 movie of the same name, please don’t! Yes, there are some connections through scenes, but those scenes honor the original instead of copy. This is a series developed by the wonderful Mindy Kaling, and she certainly knows how to turn a reboot into something that feels new.

And it could be something to watch to get through Droughtlander. Here’s why I’ve been binge-watching the series and am looking forward to the next episodes.

It’s a romantic comedy

Sometimes you want something light. Outlander is full of intense drama throughout the series. You can often need something light and just made for entertainment. That’s what Four Weddings and a Funeral offers.

More from Opinion

While there is some drama, it’s done with a comedic element. It’s a romance at the end of the day, and romance means a little drama leading to a happy ending. This limited series (it’s currently billed as that but you never know what the future has in store) offers that in spades.

Strong actors and writing

While it’s a romantic comedy, it doesn’t get away with subpar acting or writing. Don’t worry about that with Four Weddings and a Funeral. The series has some standout cast members, led by Game of Thrones’ Nathalie Emmanuel. Andie MacDowell also makes a cameo in the series.

As for the writing, well, it’s everything you’d expect from Kaling. Her team is on point, bringing a story that connects in style to the original but pushes it into the modern-day.

The characters are diverse. There are no stereotypes when it comes to the four main friends, although some of the others can seem a little cliché at first. Yet, all characters, including some of the side characters, have plenty of growth throughout the series.

There are rom-com clichés. This isn’t a show that wants to be completely unique but wants to be entertaining. And sometimes, you really do just need that.

It’s released weekly

The first four episodes are now available on Hulu. You can check out the series and get a real look at whether this is going to be for you. After that, it’s all about the weekly release.

You’ve got 10 episodes in total in Four Weddings and a Funeral Season 1. So, there are five more weeks of episodes to keep you entertained. If you decide to remain a little behind everyone else (and avoid the internet for the spoilers) then you’ll actually have 10 weeks of Droughtlander solved with a new episode a week!

You’ll get a diverse cast

One of the downsides of many TV shows right now is the lack of diversity. TV is getting so much better, and Four Weddings and a Funeral is a show that is leading by example. The cast is diverse in color, gender, and sexuality. And that’s not to say it’s perfect because there are definitely some more steps that could be taken, but it’s an excellent start!

If you love strong and independent women, then you’re going to want to watch for Ainsley. She picks up the pieces after being left and the altar and manages to find success in her life and her work. Meanwhile, Maya manages to step out from constantly relying on a man, even if it isn’t easy for her.

I do think Gemma is the one that gets the most development. She steps out of the stereotype of jealous, snobby friend and becomes a sound voice for many of the characters.
