It looks like there’s definitely a change to the Outlander novels storyline. Outlander Season 5 is reportedly heading to Midhope Castle next month.
All eyes are on the Outlander Season 5 filming plan. We want to know where the cast and crew are in Scotland and what they’re doing. There’s some news that will definitely come as a surprise to the book fans, as one Twitter user can “unofficially confirm” that filming will take place at Midhope Castle next month.
We’d already reported that this was possible. Midhope Castle had previously been slated to be closed for a while for filming. The question was whether it would be for our series or something else that’s Scotland based. After all, many TV shows and movies have used some of the Outlander locations, including most recently Outlaw King and Mary, Queen of Scots.

Well, it turns out that David Rankin can “unofficially confirm” that it will definitely be our show heading to Midhope Castle, which fans know as Lallybroch. And he is someone to pay attention to. He manages a number of tours for the series, as well as tours for the likes of Mary, Queen of Scots and general Scottish castles.
Filming will take place for four weeks. What isn’t clear is who exactly will be there. Rankin believes that it will be Jamie and Claire Fraser, but there’s no guarantee of that right now. He doesn’t state when the filming will start, but that it will go on for four weeks.
What’s interesting is that this will mean a change to the book storyline. Claire and Jamie don’t go to Lallybroch in Book 5, titled “The Fiery Cross.” However, the former home of Jamie Fraser does come up later in the book series. It’s possible that instead of doing one book per season, the showrunners have decided to combine book storylines.
In a way, combining the storylines would make sense. It could be easier to focus on one overall storyline for a season, making the series more like a traditional TV series with a story arc. In another sense, it could be easier to manage plot points that fans are disappointed in not getting because of the need to condense for time.
However, it does mean that more of the smaller details could be missing from the series in the future. Trying to fit these in gets harder when the bigger storylines come up.
Of course, Midhope Castle may not actually make it to Outlander Season 5. It’s possible that the set is being used for the Outlander Untold storylines, which we know are going to happen for Season 5. Would four weeks of filming sound right for something like this?
