Why isn’t Outlander at SDCC 2019?

Outlander won’t get a panel at SDCC 2019. Why is this? What does it mean for the future of the series?

Outlander isn’t going to be at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. Well, at least, not in an official capacity with a panel. There will be the Outlander Fan Panel and it will get an appearance through the STARZ booth. But why will it not get a panel?

I know it’s normal to worry about the fate of a show when it’s been at SDCC and won’t be for the upcoming year. However, there’s no need to worry about this STARZ series. There are some very good reasons why the show won’t get a panel.

More from Opinion

Let’s just start with the fact that the show is currently filming. Outlander Season 5 filming will be about four or five episodes in right now. The show doesn’t film in order of episode but in blocks, so it’s hard to tell where it will be at this point. However, it’s not even at the halfway point.

We know the show isn’t going to premiere until at least the beginning of 2020. Filming has to take priority and the production won’t want to take a few days of mid-filming for SDCC 2019. We may see Caitriona Balfe take some days off to promote The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance but she’s not a key player in that show so won’t be heavily missed for that promotion to focus on our series.

And the timing of release will also be the reason for the cast and crew not to be at SDCC 2019. If it doesn’t premiere until at least January to March 2020, there’s no point giving it a panel at the summer convention. It’s more likely to get a panel at the fall-set New York Comic-Con 2019. This is what happened last year to help time with the November release date for Season 4 for better promotion.

NYCC 2019 makes more sense for Outlander. This would work with how Amazon Prime’s Good Omens and The Boys got NYCC placements instead of SDCC 2018 panels, due to the May and upcoming July releases respectively.

I don’t think there’s anything to worry about at all. This isn’t a sign that STARZ doubts the success of the show but more that it wants to promote the right shows. The Rook will get a panel, which makes sense since it will still be on the air at the time. But very few STARZ shows are getting a panel this year.
