Possible Midhope Castle closures mean changes to Outlander Season 5 storyline?
Midhope Castle is known to Outlander fans as Lallybroch. There are chances the location will be closed for filming. Does this mean a change to the books in Outlander Season 5?
Lallybroch has a special place in the hearts of Outlander fans around the home. It’s not surprising that Midhope Castle is on the list of must-see sites on an Outlander tour. However, the location may be closed in the summer for filming and this could mean Season 5 will see some strays from the storyline?
Caution: There are some spoilers from the books in this post. If you are a show-first fan, you may want to turn back now. Just be aware if you’re heading on a tour for the show soon then you’ll want to keep an eye on the closure of Midhope Castle.

For now, we’re looking at the future of the series. In Book 5, “The Fiery Cross,” the storyline doesn’t head to Scotland. The idea of Midhope Castle being closed possibly for filming of the series would mean a slight change to the story.
There are a few reasons for this:
- We could see letters from Scotland played out
- Flashbacks may be used
- Books could be joined together, incorporating storylines from future books instead of one book per season (something the showrunners regularly talk about)
- Storylines will change to keep the Scottish feeling
Of course, there’s no guarantee that the closure for filming is for Season 5 of the series. Locations like this around Scotland are used for other Scotland-set shows. In the past, we’ve seen show sets used for Mary, Queen of Scots and Outlaw King. Another film or series could be filming.
However, many on Twitter believe that it’s Season 5 filming. We’ll have to wait and see, but it’s worth keeping an eye on the location in August and September. Exact dates haven’t been given yet, and there’s nothing on Midhope Castle’s official website yet, but it’s something to think about if you’re planning on a trip to Scotland.
If it is Lallybroch, it links back to theories from April, when the filming may have headed back to Preston Mill, which was used as the mill at Lallybroch.
