The University of Stirling will become the second university in Scotland to award Sam Heughan with an honorary degree.

The University of Glasgow isn’t the only Scottish university with an honorary degree for Outlander’s leading man. Sam Heughan is gaining an honorary degree from the University of Stirling, too.

Heughan will be joining World Cup winner Lilian Thuram, CEO of Whitbread Alison Brittain CBE, and Double-BAFTA award-winning director Hamish Hamilton for the honorary degrees. Their ceremony takes place on June 27 at the campus.

More from Sam Heughan

It’s an amazing achievement for the Scottish actor. After all, this isn’t just recognition for his role on the TV series, which has certainly brought in plenty of tourism around the country. The University of Stirling wants to recognize him for his charity work, too.

You’ve likely heard of My Peak Challenge. This was co-founded by Heughan and raises money for a number of charities in the country. One of those is Bloodwise, a charity that raises money for blood cancer awareness and treatments and he is the president of.

Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Gerry McCormac, did naturally bring up Outlander when explaining why Heughan was getting this recognition. It is the show that has made him famous around the world. However, the honorary degree is also for his dedication to “improving the lives of others” through his charity work, according to Herald Scotland.

If you’re close to Stirling, you may want to pick up a copy of the Stirling Observer from this week. It has a list of all those gaining degrees from the university next week — and that will include Sam Heughan’s name.
