Outlander’s Sam Heughan will receive honorary doctorate from University of Glasgow
Sam Heughan is getting recognition for his work in Outlander and his charitable causes. He’ll receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Glasgow.
Sam Heughan is heading back to university but not to study. He’ll head to the University of Glasgow in the near future to get his honorary doctorate for his contributions to the arts and charities. And as Outlander fans, we’re excited to see him get the recognition he deserves.
Professor Carol Hill, head of the school, says that it’s important to mark the upcoming 20th anniversary of the school opening, serving the “higher education needs of Dumfries and Galloway.” The school wants to recognize the “talents, careers, and charitable interests,” according to Glasgow Live.

One of the talents has to be Outlander’s Sam Heughan, who originally comes from Balmaclellan, a village in Dumfries and Galloway. While he’s moved around since then and later attended the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now called the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland), that doesn’t mean his beginnings should be forgotten.
While he is best known for his work on the time-traveling love story series, Heughan is also known for his charitable works. He’s the president of Scotland Bloodwise, a charity to raise funds for blood cancer research and awareness. He also completed a Peak Challenge in 2018, running two marathons in two months for Cahonas Scotland.
Speaking of the Peak Challenge, this is something that he’s greatly known for around the world. He established My Peak Challenge, which focuses on nutrition and training but with a sense of community and charity. This cause encourages people to get fit and work towards personal goals.
Most honorary doctorates involve some sort of ceremony. We’ll keep an eye out for Sam Heughan’s at the University of Glasgow.
