A focus on Claire Fraser’s children in Outlander the TV series
Claire Fraser has two biological children in Outlander the TV series so far. However, there are many others close to her heart.
It’s Mother’s Day in the United States and Canada today. This is a perfect time to celebrate motherhood. While there are many other mothers in the series, I want to focus on Outlander‘s Claire Fraser today. She may only have two biological children in the show, but there are others close to her heart and a part of her life with Jamie.
The mother

When you think carefully about it, there are eight children (some adult children) in the show. One of those was stillborn, but it’s clear that it’s a loss she will never get over. No mother ever gets over the loss of a child, miscarriage, stillbirth, or death after birth (at any age). So, there’s no way that we could ever forget Faith Fraser.
Then there is the living child, the one who has now become a mother herself. Brianna Randall Fraser MacKenzie has made it to the past, bringing a light to Jamie’s eyes that he’s not had for a very long time. While they don’t always see eye to eye, Bree and Jamie are as stubborn as each other and have more in common than their fiery red hair.
As the stepmother
But what about the other six? I’ll start with Willie Ransom, Jamie’s illegitimate child with Geneva Dunsany. While not permanently in their lives, Willie does have an important role. He’s the reminder of the events that happened at Helwater — the events in the 20 years Claire and Jamie were separated.
Willie may not know Jamie is his father yet, but that secret is bound to come out eventually, right? Even if Willie doesn’t accept Jamie, they’re still father and son. That makes Claire his stepmother.
The mother-in-law
Then there’s the role of the mother-in-law. Claire has two children-in-law technically. One of those is easy to work out based on the fact that we know Brianna is the biological daughter of Claire and Jamie. Bree married Roger through a handfasting ceremony, which is as good as marriage as long as it’s made officially within a year and a day.
We know that Bree and Roger will likely get married in Outlander Season 5. Roger is a permanent part of the Fraser life, making him a son-in-law to Claire.
Then there’s Marsali. Yes, the daughter of Laoghaire MacKenzie MacKimmie. While the two didn’t always get along, both women have grown to like and even love each other. Marsali got a chance to see that Claire wasn’t the witch her mother made her out to be, while Claire had a chance to see that Marsali was nothing like her mother.
And it’s this mother-in-law/daughter-in-law relationship that takes us to the final child of Claire Fraser.
The adopted mother
Fergus Claudel Fraser has been a part of Claire’s life long before any of the others. While Claire was pregnant with Faith, Fergus came into her life as a pickpocket and employee. He then followed the two to Scotland and was loved and cared for by the Frasers. They were all he ever knew as parents and the two unofficially adopted him into their lives.
When Claire left for 20 years, Fergus remained loyal to Jamie and Claire. He was happy to see her return and has remained loyal ever since. However, it wasn’t until his marriage to Marsali that he was officially made a Fraser. Even though it was always known, Jamie gave Fergus the Fraser name officially and the look of happiness on Claire’s face made it clear that Fergus was a son to her, even if they weren’t related by blood; unless you think of the connections down the line considering the theories of who Fergus’ biological father is.
The grandmother
Finally, we come onto the two babies that are now part of Outlander the TV series. First is Marsali and Fergus’ son, Germain. You could see in the fourth season that Claire was happy to be a grandmother and would treat this boy sweetly. She had a new chance at doting on a child.
Then came Brianna and Roger to the past and Bree found herself pregnant. Claire became a biological grandmother to a child. While she did offer Bree a way to abort the baby if necessary, it was clear that she didn’t really want that to happen. This was always going to be Brianna’s choice and nobody else’s.
We’ll get to see more of Claire as a grandmother moving forward, especially now that Fraser’s Ridge has both sets of parents living there.
Claire Fraser has welcomed many into her life in Outlander Season 4. Many more than you would initially think. There are sure to be more to come.
Happy Mother’s Day, Claire Fraser — and to all the moms, grandmothers, and mother-figures out there.
