4. Jamie finds an excellent way to get Claire to understand the situation
At one point, Claire tries to stand up for Jamie. In our time (and even her time) it would be accepted but in Jamie’s time, she embarrasses him. We can’t expect Jamie to accept Claire’s actions immediately but he doesn’t want to make her meek and obedient. He knows that’s not who she is.
Instead, he explains the situation well. He makes it clear how women of the time need to react, while also sharing his opinions about Letitia. It’s a chance to bridge the gap, and also show that women don’t need to be meek in the bedroom.

However, that doesn’t stop her from speaking out when Rabbie’s father is beating him. If only she was in a position to do something about it.
3. It’s hard not to feel for Jenny
With Jamie returning, Jenny and Ian were moved out of their rooms and their positions running the land was knocked down a peg. It was clear Jenny wasn’t happy about that, but what could she do?
It was hard not to feel sorry for Jenny throughout this. She’d managed to run the house and the land. She was the one there for the tenants throughout the years. However, Jamie was the one who was the rightful laird. And he was more than happy to take it all off her hands.
Of course, she wasn’t just going to sit back and let him ruin them because of his good favor. She’d found a way to balance being fair and doing what was needed, and she was willing to offer some pointers.
When at the wheel mill, Jenny finally sees the damage done to Jamie’s back. She’d probably heard about it but seeing is something different. Seeing it the way she did was always going to be a shock.
