5 best lines from Outlander Season 1, Episode 11
Outlander Season 1, Episode 11 delivered the witch trial against Geillis and Claire. Here are my five favorite lines from the episode.
Everything up to this point had hinted that a witch trial would happen. It was clear that the people still didn’t trust Claire (or even Geillis). They were outsiders, even if Geillis was Scottish, and that meant trouble for both eventually. Outlander Season 1, Episode 11 delivered a witch trial to remember.
There were moments where it looked like there was a bit of hope. Then moments where it was clear the people would want to burn the two outsiders. Here are my five favorite lines from “The Devil’s Mark.”
We won’t be here long. Dougal will come for us.

Geillis’ lines were some of my favorites throughout Outlander Season 1, Episode 11. This was the moment that it was clear she was definitely from the future. But it was also the moment it was clear that she had fallen madly in love with Dougal. She was blind to the truth.
Maybe she was telling the truth later when she said that she’d do it all over again, that the witch trials didn’t bother her. Or maybe she just had this blind faith that Dougal felt the same way for her and would want her and the baby to survive. It’s clear that Geillis certainly didn’t think she would die.
So isn’t it true, then, that your fear and silence allowed her to contaminate the bairn so that when the fairies came they could not complete the switch? At least you can take comfort in knowing that it was the changeling child that died, and that your own child is healthy, living forever with the fairies.
Ned Gowan came to Claire’s defense and there are some great lines from him throughout “The Devil’s Mark.” This is the one that stands out the most. It’s a moment where he shows compassion while developing an excellent defense.
He knows that alienating the witnesses would end up causing problems for the case. While Claire shouts and screams from the stand, Ned finds a way to help the case. He turns arguments on their head and we have the chance to see just why he’s Colum’s lawyer.
I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.
Claire made it extremely clear that she was from the future at this point. This is the moment I wished that Geillis would have just said something. They could have finally had an honest conversation. Claire could have understood Geillis’ actions better. It could have built a much better trust between each other.
I think Geillis telling the truth would have actually helped the end of the witch trials make sense. Instead, it was like she just saw the love between Claire and Jamie and that was what made Geillis sacrifice herself for Claire. Maybe it was a feeling that Dougal would do the same for her. It didn’t make as much as sense as having an honest conversation after this line could have done.
I trust your word, your heart. And I trust there is a truth between us. So whatever you tell me I will believe ye.
When it comes to honest conversations, this was the moment that changed the relationship between Claire and Jamie to something strong, stable, and full of truth. Claire finally told Jamie everything, literally everything.
But it was this line that stood out from all the rest. With everything that he’d heard, Jamie didn’t question Claire at all. He asked questions to understand but he didn’t question her sanity or whether she was being honest. He made it clear that he would trust anything she said, maybe because things finally made sense to him after all this time.
On your feet, soldier. Take me home to Lallybroch.
The final line is one of my favorites of the whole series. This is the moment that Claire makes it clear that her place is with Jamie. The world of the 18th century may be full of violence and danger, but she wouldn’t have her life any other way now. She needs to be with Jamie forever.
I do wish there was something mentioned in the next episode that she definitely chose Jamie. I suppose this was the line that was meant to tell us this, but I wondered at first whether she wasn’t able to go through the stones and she spent time just accepting that. However, I get now after rewatches that this was her way of telling Jamie that it would always be him.
