5 best lines from Outlander Season 1, Episode 10
Outlander Season 1, Episode 10 delivered an episode that pushed plotlines forward. Here are my favorite lines from By the Pricking of My Thumbs.
We got a plot-moving episode in Outlander Season 1, Episode 10, as Dougal and Geillis’ spouses both died. However, this was also an episode that delivered some development for Claire and Jamie.
This isn’t one of my all-time favorite episodes, but it did have some strong moments. It also had some strong lines. Here are my five favorite lines from the episode.
I’m not about to offer up my hindquarters. But His Grace wields a fair amount of power in court, and if so inclined, he could lift the price on my head.

Jamie knows that the Duke of Sandringham’s interest in him isn’t all that innocent. He knows that it’s not all friendliness but that the Sandringham has other interests in men. This line makes that extremely clear.
In a way, I’m surprised Jamie had so much glee in his eyes when saying this line after everything he’d already been through at Fort William. However, another part of me isn’t surprised. He’d found a way to possibly be a free man and he was excited about that. It’s because of this that I have to put this as one of my favorite lines.
Look, I know you have deep feelings for Jamie, and that when tender regard is denied, it can be very hurtful, especially in one so young as yourself.
I love that Claire recognizes why Laoghaire acted out the way she did. This is something we could all learn from. Claire realized that at such a young age, Laoghaire was naturally going to lash out when feeling hurt. To Laoghaire, Jamie was hers. She believed that they loved each other and that Claire was the one getting in the way.
Claire didn’t realize just how dangerous Laoghaire would eventually be, but that’s beside the point in this part of the episode. During this moment, Claire just acknowledged how Laoghaire felt and showed some empathy. Regardless of everything later, empathy goes a long way and it showed a good side to Claire.
And for the parents of that child, it might comfort them a bit to think it’s the changeling that died. And think of their own child, healthy and well, living forever with the fairies.
And the empathy continues. Jamie was the one to say this line, after explaining why the people in the village believe in faeries and changelings. He brought up the parents would leave a sick child out to die. They truly didn’t believe that it was their child.
Like Claire with the previous line, we got to see Jamie thinking of someone else. He was able to put himself in someone else’s shoes. Considering the loss of Faith both Claire and Jamie face, I love that we see this side of Jamie now.
I must admit that shielding him from the consequences of his misdeeds sometimes feels like a full-time occupation. And I loathe work.
As awful as the Duke of Sandringham is, I do love Simon Callow’s portrayal of him. He lights up the screen each time and steals every moment he’s in. It shouldn’t be surprising that one of his lines from Outlander Season 1, Episode 10 is included in this post.
It’s all about Black Jack Randall. The duke makes it look like he’s fed up of cleaning up after all Randall’s messes. It’s hard to tell which side he’s on, though. But there’s one thing for sure. He certainly loathes work!
With Arthur gone, there’ll be no one to protect her from her own reputation.
In case anyone was shocked that Geillis had been arrested at the end of the episode, this line was the perfect foreshadow to it. The only reason Geillis was protected for so long from the gossip of the town was Arthur Duncan. His position meant that she was safe, in a similar way that Colum’s wife and Dougal were protected despite rumors of who Hamish’s father really was.
Geillis never thought of this. It’s clear that others had, though. Jamie knew that she wasn’t safe and he didn’t want Claire anywhere near her. Of course, Claire couldn’t listen and just do as he asked on this one occasion!
