International Women’s Day 2019: 5 women in Outlander to gain inspiration from
5. Geillis Duncan
Who she was: Say what? Geillis Duncan is a woman to take inspriation from this International Women’s Day? Yes, I know you’re wondering how this woman could be inspirational at all. By the end of her time on the series (and in the books) she’d gone crazy. She was still after the 200-year-old baby and the hope that she would be able to gain independence for Scotland.
However, it’s not the end of her life that you’ll want to look at for inspiration. Take a look at the first time we met her. Geillis, formerly Gillian, was a woman from the future. Passionate about an independent Scotland, she decided to sacrifice her life in her time to get to the past and push for the Jacobite rebellion.

Armed with future knowledge, she hoped that she’d be able to give Scotland the information needed to win. However, things never worked out thanks to the belief that she was a witch.
Geillis is a survivor, though. She managed to get out of being burned at the stake thanks to her connection to Dougal MacKenzie and she routinely made sure she married well to do well in the past — a time when women were second-class citizens. She tried to remain one step ahead of everything, going in with a plan of attack instead of winning it.
Take inspiration from her because: She’s a woman on a mission. Geillis has a passion and she’s willing to do what it takes to gain what she wants. That may not always be good for others, but it would be interesting to see the whole story from her side.
