Outlander Season 4 delivered a cliffhanger of a finale. Jamie and Murtagh are officially on opposite sides of the current rising, but what will Jamie do next in Outlander Season 5?

In the Outlander Season 4 finale, we were finally delivered the news we expected. Jamie was ordered to create a militia and he would need to capture and kill his own godfather. Now all eyes are on Jamie for Outlander Season 5. Just what will Jamie do next?

This isn’t something we can turn to the books for answers. With the change to Murtagh’s storyline, we have a storyline that will need to be adapted and allows the writers to create stories of their own (whether book fans like the stories or not is another matter). Tensions are high and loyalties will be tested.

More from Opinion

We all knew that this was coming. Jamie had gained land with the promise of loyalty. Claire warned him that this would happen and neither really wanted to take Governor Tryon’s offer. However, Jamie had found a place he fell in love with and the land was taken.

In the novels, Jamie certainly gets an order to form a militia. However, it doesn’t quite have the same weight to it because Murtagh isn’t his first mission. What will he do in Outlander Season 5? Will he go after his own godfather or put himself and his family at risk?

It’s not going to be an easy choice for him. This isn’t just about him and Claire anymore. He has Brianna, Roger, and his grandson to think about as all will now move to Fraser’s Ridge. Fergus, Marsali, and their son will also move to the Ridge. Then there will be his Aunt Jocasta, who has formed a relationship with Murtagh.

Of course, we can’t forget the bond that he and Murtagh already have. While Jamie isn’t quite happy with the Regulators, he isn’t completely against them. He understands why they’re rebelling against the taxes and Jamie has already risked himself once to protect Murtagh.

But what choice does he have? Could he pretend to put a militia together? How about pretend that he’s killed Murtagh? Surely it won’t be that easy.

There is the option of Murtagh getting out of dodge. Maybe he could go to another colony, but that won’t be all that easy. How about the Cherokee neighbors? Would they even consider taking Murtagh in for the time being?

What happens in The Fiery Cross?

This part is going to get a little spoilery for those who haven’t ready the books yet. You can skip this if you want.

In “The Fiery Cross,” Jamie is given the order to create a militia. Because Murtagh isn’t involved, there’s no question about what he will do. He forms it and goes off on his orders. However, he and Claire end up sidetracked.

This could be the storyline that the series goes with. Jamie could create the militia and end up sidetracked along the way, unknowingly delaying the search for Murtagh enough for Governor Tryon to change his course of action.

At another point in the story, the militia is ordered to go after the Regulators. This leads to the Battle of Alamance, which is one of the important and famous battles in the lead-up to the American Revolutionary War. This could be the storyline the show opts to follow instead.
