Liking Brianna and Roger doesn’t stop anyone from liking Claire and Jamie

There’s some tension in the parts of the Outlander fandom. For some, there’s a view that those who like Brianna and Roger’s storyline have forgotten about Claire and Jamie — that they’ve stopped liking the core couple. That’s certainly not the case for most!

When new characters are introduced, tensions rise. Sometimes it feels like sides have to be chosen and if you refuse to choose a side, it is selected for you. The Outlander fandom is seeing that now that Brianna and Roger have gained more focus.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve enjoyed seeing more Brianna and Roger. These two are becoming main characters. In fact, they are main characters this season. That’s clear from the amount Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin were involved in the promotion for the season. Yet, it seems that if you like them then you must not like Claire and Jamie, the core couple.

More from Opinion

While I’m only speaking for myself, I know plenty of others on Twitter who have said something similar: just because we like Brianna and Roger does not mean we don’t like Claire and Jamie! It is possible to like both couples, just like it’s possible to also like the side characters, such as Young Ian, Murtagh, Ruper and Angus, Dougal (he had his moments), and many more.

The two couples bring something different. In the earlier books and seasons, it was all about Claire and Jamie. They were finding each other, in that honeymoon phase. Then came the politics and the battles, meaning they had to figure out their changing relationship within that.

Outlander Season 4 has seen the two mature more and build a home together. The honeymoon period storyline has shifted onto Brianna and Roger. We’re getting to see the younger storyline but what could have happened had Claire and Jamie remained together.

Okay, take out the being sold to the Mohawks and being raped by a pirate out of the equation. Moving forward, we’re going to see Brianna and Roger learn more about each other. They’ve not lived together for long periods of time before and this is their chance, while married and with a child together. This is a look at what could have been.

While wanting to see Brianna and Roger more, it doesn’t take away from the hope of seeing Claire and Jamie on the same page, connected in the way that they used to be. It’s possible to want to see both storylines play out and I’m, personally, looking forward to the fifth season to get the chance to see all that.

I’m not quite sure why there’s the belief from some that you can’t like one if you like another. We like things for different reasons, so shouldn’t we be able to like two couples at the same time for different reasons?
