Why would Lord John Grey risk so much at Jocasta’s on Outlander?
Brianna found out about Lord John Grey’s secret after finding him in the closet with the judge. Why would he have risked so much while at Jocasta’s plantation on Outlander Season 4, Episode 11?
During Outlander Season 4, Episode 11, Brianna found out Lord John Grey’s secret. She happened to find him in the pantry with the judge. While it was a way to bring part of the book storyline to life much quicker and in a way that was easier for Brianna to figure out the truth, it’s opened up plenty of questions.
The biggest question surrounds Lord John Grey’s actions. Why would he even consider doing something like a tryst with the judge when he was a guest in someone’s home?

At first glance, it doesn’t seem like he would do such a thing. He is an honorable man and a gentleman. Would he really put his host at risk of him getting caught having sex with a man?
Well, while he is honorable, he is also a passionate man. There have been plenty of times Lord John has made it clear that he’s gone against the grain. Hell, he got sent to govern Ardsmuir Prison because of his previous actions, which we were given a glimpse of in Season 3 deleted scenes.
At the same time, people do have lapses of judgment now and then. Considering Jocasta is blind and the slaves likely wouldn’t dare talk about a judge and a lord (who would believe them considering the time?), they may not have even considered there was that much of a risk.
Lapses of judgment happen in times of lust. It doesn’t make it right, but it is understandable how it could happen.
I am glad that we had Lord John Grey in a tryst with the judge and not the storyline that was in “Drums of Autumn.” While it wasn’t explicit in the books, it involved a slave and that brought up many questions of consent. I’d rather see Lord John put his and a judge’s life at risk instead of having us question whether he coerced a slave into a passionate night — and yes, that question would have come up.
