Outlander’s Jocasta is that meddling family member we all have but love deeply
Every family has one of those members who will always meddle in the lives of others. In the world of Outlander, that person is Jocasta Cameron.
Jocasta Cameron is a MacKenzie. She’s conniving and manipulative, but she also has a view of honor and cares about what other people thing. In Outlander, she’s the family member we all have — the meddling member that you can’t help but love.
It was clear when she initially named Jamie her heir that she had a plan. She isn’t going to die any time soon and having Jamie as her heir means she protects her fortune and her property. When Jamie left, she was back at square one and then this unexpecting pregnant daughter.

Part of Jocasta sees the chance to get another heir and keep the property in the family. Another part of her cares about what people around will say. After all, she can’t leave River Run to Brianna if her name is tarnished. So, Jocasta needs to make sure someone marries Brianna before the baby comes.
There’s also a maternal side to her. Throughout Maria Doyle Kennedy’s performance, you could tell that there were some moments where Jocasta was simply being maternal. Yes, she had another motive, but she does care for Brianna. This is the daughter of her nephew, after all.
While Jocasta can’t see, she can sense that Brianna is very much like Ellen Fraser. It’s clear that Jocasta misses her sister and she adored having Jamie around. With Brianna being so much like Ellen, it’s natural that Jocasta will get some fond memories. She wants the best for this reminder of the past.
And Jocasta took Brianna in when Brianna had nobody else. With Claire, Jamie, and Young Ian off searching for Roger, Brianna needed someone to take her in and look out for her. Jocasta has become someone to trust and bond with, and despite the meddling, there is some honesty in her motives and that makes her one of those meddling family members you love.
