Is there hope for Murtagh on Outlander?

Murtagh is in a tricky predicament on Outlander after the events of the last episode. What’s going to happen to him next?

Outlander Season 4, Episode 11 may have been focused mostly on Brianna’s storyline, but Murtagh also had a major role to play. He found and captured Stephen Bonnet at the request of Jamie, but it wasn’t without getting himself in trouble.

As a word of warning, there are spoilers from the show in this. As Murtagh isn’t in the books from this point, there are no book spoilers.

Murtagh’s inclusion in the storyline has caused a few events to change. Excitingly, it means that it’s impossible to tell what’s going to happen in the storyline. Even the book fans can’t use their knowledge of the future stories to know which way this will go.

There are a few options for Murtagh on Outlander. The first is that he could be killed, but it seems odd that the writers would save him just to kill him off like this. It would certainly give Jamie reason to hate the British more and join the Regulators, but considering Claire knows this part of history, he doesn’t really need another reason in the future to cement himself on the American’s side.

Death is certainly an option, but what about finding a way to save him? Is there a chance that Jamie could use his connections to Lord John Grey? Would Grey even consider helping Murtagh, a known Regulator?

Another option is for Fergus to join the Regulators and help free Fergus. I doubt that would happen since it would put his wife and child under too much threat. Fergus wouldn’t commit mutiny for Jamie, so he wouldn’t run the risk of breaking Murtagh out of jail. However, I wouldn’t put it past Fergus getting word to the other Regulators.

I don’t think we’ll lose Murtagh. That doesn’t make sense. Well, that is unless he makes a sacrifice in the Season 4 finale.
