Outlander brought us one last reunion with Murtagh. Fergus was the one to save his life and it’s everything we didn’t realize we needed.

Outlander Season 4, Episode 8 certainly brought us plenty of drama. One of the moments was trying to stop Murtagh robbing the treasury and walking into a trap. Fergus was the one to save Murtagh’s life, bringing us the reunion we didn’t realize we needed.

Who else didn’t realize Murtagh and Fergus wouldn’t have been reunited yet? After all, Fergus was in Wilmington like Murtagh. It almost seems surprising that the two wouldn’t have crossed paths, especially with Jamie likely telling both that they were around. Obviously, it was something to keep for an onscreen moment like this.

More from Opinion

Fergus clearly didn’t argue with Jamie about going to stop Murtagh. He knew it was necessary to keep Jamie’s godfather away from the noose. Robbery was a hanging offense.

Yet, what we got was a sweet, quick reunion that showed the bond Murtagh and Fergus had. Within seconds, Murtagh realized who Fergus was. The last time Murtagh would have seen Fergus, the Frenchman was just a boy. Yet, right away, Murtagh could tell that this was the boy that Murtagh had looked after for a long time in the buildup to Culloden — that “horrible” time that Young Fergus had mentioned in Outlander Season 2.

We got what that bond meant to both Fergus and Murtagh. For Fergus, it was a time to grow up and he was fond of the man that did, in a way, help raise him for a short time.

For Murtagh, it was more important. When asking where Jamie was, Murtagh made it clear that the second best person to stop him was Fergus. He knew that Jamie obviously had his reasons for being at the theater. Sending Fergus showed that it was important to stop Murtagh and that Jamie still trusted Fergus with everything — after all, Fergus was the one trusted with the deed to Lallybroch to sign it over and Murtagh knew that.

This quick reunion helped to sum up that bond and the meaning of that bond instantly. In an episode of drama and breakups, it was a reunion we didn’t realize we needed until it happened.
