5 best lines from Outlander Season 4, Episode 5
Outlander Season 4, Episode 5 had some beautiful and heartbreaking moments. Here are the five best lines from Savages.
While many are looking at the most recent episode, I almost overlooked the best lines piece from Outlander Season 4, Episode 5. So, before moving on, I want to touch on some of the heartbreaking, bittersweet, and beautiful lines from the episode titled “Savages.”
For those who still have Lord John Grey’s reunion with Jamie, Claire, and Murtagh on their mind, “Savages” was the episode that saw Herr Mueller believe his family had been cursed by the Cherokee neighbors. After his daughter and granddaughter died of the measles, he attacked and killed who he believed was a witch.
Here are the five best lines from the whole episode.
She is here.
Claire and Adawehi bond at the start of the episode, showing that they are friends with similar abilities. What’s important is how Adawehi clearly has magic within her. She knows that Brianna is in the current time, but Claire mistakenly believes that Adawehi means Brianna is in Claire’s heart.
I do wish that there was more time to develop this relationship. While I know the episode played out the way the books did, part of me wishes that things could have been slightly different. I would have loved to see more of Claire learning from Adawehi.
And a bonnie daughter, or two.

Young Ian cracks me up every time. The episodes he’s not in, there’s not as much comedic relief. But then too much could be a downfall for Outlander. “Savages” had the right balance, with Young Ian showing just how much of a “lad” he is.
Jamie’s retort to this line adds to the humor, making it clear Young Ian only needs one bonnie lass. Young Ian’s relationship with his uncle is just right.
Claire came back to me. After 20 years. Some days, I still canna believe it myself.
I love that Murtagh returned and this reunion is perfect. As they chat, Jamie gets the chance to catch Murtagh up to speed and it’s in this moment we see him admit his feelings. We’ve never seen him admit that he sometimes can’t believe that Claire returned to him. After all, he has nobody to tell.
Murtagh was the only one to know Claire was from the future. This scene was needed to show how deeply Jamie feels about Claire’s return.
I gave my word. I canna in good conscience involve myself in this. I won’t join you, but, uh, I wilna try to stop ye, either.
And then we get this. After Murtagh reveals himself as a Regulator, he asks for Jamie to join him. Of course, Jamie can’t. His word is always his bond.
However, he does put himself in the middle. He’s playing Switzerland, not joining Murtagh but not standing in his way either. This, of course, will create some problems in the future.
The creek, the lake, the stream. They do not come to my land for water! The savages come to show that my land is theirs!
Finally, Herr Mueller gets the last best line. In a heartbreaking moment, we get the reason for the tensions. The white colonists are constantly on guard. Deep down, they know they’ve taken land off others and now they’re worried about that land being taken from them. And honestly, I couldn’t have blamed the Cherokee for fighting.
While water may belong to no one, it’s easy to see why Herr Mueller viewed it as a threat or a show of power. This line makes that clear, even if it is mixed within such a heartbreaking scene.
