Once again Sam Heughan was snubbed at the Golden Globes. However, we really should focus on the positives for Outlander.

It’s always hard to look at the list of nominations and not feel disappointed that Outlander and Sam Heughan wasn’t nominated. He certainly deserved it, but instead of focusing on the negatives, we really should focus on the positives. Let’s not forget that Caitriona Balfe was nominated for Best Actress at the Golden Globes once again.

By focusing on the negatives, many overlook the fact that Balfe was nominated. And this is a huge achievement. By getting just one nomination, the show is publicized. More people hear about it and they’re more likely to check it out.

Balfe is the lead female. Sure, this is Claire and Jamie’s story, but the showrunners have always said that Outlander is Claire’s story. That’s clear from some of the biggest moments throughout the series in recent years. Claire is this strong-willed and independent woman.

At times she riles me and I can’t stand the way she’s written, but for the most part, she’s a positive portrayal. In fact, she can be inspirational. At no point does she compromise her beliefs, but she will always look out for her family and attempt to do what is right. Whether you like some of the changes to the book or not, they’re happening and they can send positive messages to the fans.

And it’s these messages that Balfe’s nomination helps to push forward. More people will hear about her scenes and more women, in particular, could choose to check out the show.

Plus, negativity breeds negativity. It puts a downer on the whole awards show. This takes away the focus from all the other nominations — and not just for Balfe. There are many other brilliant shows and actors who have been awarded and sometimes it can feel like their hard work is being ignored as people are too focused on who didn’t get a nod.

It is a shame that Sam Heughan wasn’t nominated. He does deserve it, but we can’t take that away from Balfe’s well-deserved nod. This is a chance to be wholly supportive and positive about the show, because at least it got recognition somewhere. That’s more than I can say for other shows that I adore.

If people constantly see other shows being slammed because Outlander didn’t get nominated, they’re not as likely to check out the show. This is especially if they’re happy that their current favorite show was nominated? Fans are likely to walk away from fan groups because of the negativity. We want to build the fandom and that always works better through positivity.
