There’s an important part of Murtagh’s costume for Outlander Season 4. He still carries that piece of plaid from Ardsmuir Prison.

In Outlander Season 3, we got to see who owned the piece of plaid. Taken from his tartan, Murtagh kept hold of a small piece and kept it hidden while at Ardsmuir Prison. That piece is still part of his costume in the fourth season.

In an interview with Vulture, Duncan Lacroix confirmed that the piece of plaid is still there. It’s part of a broach that he wears on his waistcoat, as a reminder of everything he’s been through. It’s possibly this that helps drive his fight against the Redcoats as a Regulator, reminding him of the hardship of prison (not that he’d need a reminder!).

But didn’t the plaid get taken off him? While there was a deleted scene of the plaid being found and Murtagh being punished. Jamie later stepped up to take the punishment, following the “Voyager” storyline. However, the scene didn’t make it on the screen, so the events never technically happened.

Murtagh got to keep his sliver of plaid and it’s a constant part of him. This is a reminder of where he’s come from, after all. And it’s going to show that he’s still one of the Scots; one of those fighting against the Redcoats.

The best thing is that this is the Fraser plaid. It’s a shame that Jamie didn’t mention it in the way that he mentioned the sapphire when he saw Lord John Grey had that. What’s going to be interesting is if John sees it when he’s at Fraser’s Ridge this week.

Next. Will we see more of Murtagh in Outlander?. dark
