Murtagh’s return in Outlander was almost in Jamaica

While we finally got Murtagh’s return in the Colonies, it could have been much sooner. As early as Jamaica in Outlander Season 3.

I’ll be honest and say the return of Murtagh was perfect. But it was nearly very different. In fact, there were talks of bringing Jamie’s godfather back in Outlander Season 3 during Jamaica.

There are some spoilers from the last episode of the series. As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t count Murtagh’s return as a spoiler because we knew it was going to happen based on things showrunner Matt B. Roberts had said.

Oh, how things could have been different. During an interview with Vulture, Duncan Lacroix explained that there was a potential storyline of Murtagh being sold off as a slave in Jamaica, where the Frasers would have run into him.

Why didn’t it go ahead? Well, I’ll admit that it would have been too much thrown into the series at that point, but it looks like it was the details of the plot.

Murtagh was going to be the leader of a band of escaped slaves. Of course, he was, right? However, it wasn’t all a positive plotline a little like his storyline as a Regulator is. Murtagh was going to be a drug addict and it sounds like this was the moment that the studio didn’t go for the return.

I’m glad Sony and STARZ didn’t go for it. Instead, we’ve got more time to flesh out Murtagh’s storyline as part of the Regulators. This is a major part of the Revolutionary War and Murtagh deserves some focus after everything. It’s also not surprising to see him as one of the disenfranchised members of the Colonies considering everything he’s been through.

Putting him in Jamaica as a leader of escaped slaves would have been too much. Season 3 was already packed enough, especially the Jamaica part of the storyline. With Lord John Grey and Geillis’ return, could you imagine Murtagh in there, too?

Next. Why didn't Murtagh let anyone know he was alive on Outlander?. dark

Would you have enjoyed Murtagh’s return a little earlier? What do you think of the idea of Murtagh leading slaves? Does the Regulator storyline work better? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
