“We did.” Claire classified herself as an American with that one line in Outlander Season 4, Episode 4. It’s no wonder she wanted to remain in the Colonies.

During Outlander Season 4, Episode 4, Claire mentioned how “America” was to the same tune as a British “God Save Great George, Our King.” Jamie couldn’t help but quip about how the Americans had stolen it from the British, and Claire is proud to say “we did.”

It was a moment that made it clear that Claire believes herself to be American. This shouldn’t be that surprising and I’ll explain why, but it definitely shows why Claire wanted to remain in the Colonies at the start of this season.

But how could she forget her English roots? Well, she hasn’t exactly. She’s still English but she never really considered England as her home because of her upbringing. Nothing tied her to that location, which is why it’s not surprising to see her stand up for the Scots so much when arguing with the English during the 1740s.

When it came to living in America, she spent 20 years in Boston. After that sort of time, in a place that she has called home and her daughter has viewed it as home all her life, it’s not surprising to see Claire see herself as American. She even wanted to gain citizenship when Frank was alive. We never found out in the show if she did, but it’s possible that she and Frank finally agreed for her to gain citizenship because of schooling and work.

Either way, she pictures herself as an American. And now she gets to be part of the birth of America. The Revolutionary War is just years away. Right now, they may be on the wrong side of history, but is that the side they’ll remain on? It’s something we’ll have to find out along the way.
