Claire and her pants: The one thing missing from this Outlander scene
Fans have questioned why Claire was wearing pants in Outlander Season 4, Episode 4. While it makes some sense for book fans, there was one important thing missing from this scene.
It was hard to miss the fact that Claire was wearing trousers in Outlander Season 4, Episode 4. Completely different to other women of the time, she did look a little out of place. Terry Dresbach has confirmed that this is a nod to the books, which included a scene that wasn’t included in the series at all. And it’s a shame, because the one thing missing would help this costume stand out.
In the novel “Drums of Autumn,” Claire decides to wear trousers while building Fraser’s Ridge and traveling. Jamie doesn’t like it, but not because it looks odd for a woman to wear trousers or because they’d be difficult to get. It’s linked to the ability to see her rear end through the shape of the pants.
And this brings the beautiful scene, where Claire explains she wore trousers a lot in her time in the 60s. Trousers for women started to become more common in the 30s and 40s, but were certainly fashionable by the 60s. And yes, they are much easier to move around in the majority of the time.

Jamie points out that with the shape of her rear end through the trousers, he’d struggle to keep his hands off her. Claire’s bottom has regularly been a topic of discuss between the two of them, so it’s not surprising that he commented about it and does help to bring in a sense of continuity in their relationship.
Outlander Season 4, Episode 4 completely skipped over the conversation. It cut out the whole discussion about trousers and, instead, we had to fill in the gaps. And this is one of those instances that I just wish there was something. Just one throwaway line would have been perfectly fine.
Oh, and maybe something in the show to tell us where Claire got the pants from. Dresbach later confirmed on Twitter that the pants are Young Ian’s. Since the two are about the same size, they’re able to share clothes. This comes up later as the two will share shirts. It certainly helps to keep costs down and adds to the idea of repurposing.
Sometimes, we need it on the screen and not left for social media to explain it after. What about those who aren’t on social media? Yes, there are fans out there!
For the record, I have no problem with the majority of changes. I understand them and a lot of the time I like them and think they’re necessary. This just ended up losing an important part of the story and Jamie’s understanding of the future.
