5 reasons to watch The Last Kingdom if you love Outlander
5. It’s based on an excellent book series
Just like Outlander, The Last Kingdom is based on a book series. Rather than telling one book per season, the show has combined two books. This does mean a few things are left out but, for the most part, the story has been told extremely well.

The budget isn’t on the same level as the likes of Outlander and Game of Thrones, but this is one series that has managed to utilize a smaller budget well. It’s brought out the most important parts of the books, giving you far more detail when it comes to reading the excellent novels.
If watching characters come to life on the screen is one of the reasons you watch Outlander, then you’ll need to watch this series starring Alexander Dreymon. And I do recommend reading the books along with the series. You’ll have even more ways to get through the next Droughtlander.
Try not to compare the two. Like Outlander, the books are the books and the show is the show.
Unlike Outlander, Bernard Cornwell hasn’t had a direct connection with the adaptation of the series, but he’s been extremely happy with how the series has played out. He’s more than happy to let the show adapt his future books — and he’s working on Book 12 at the moment!
