Was Claire right to mention Frank in Outlander Season 4, Episode 3?

During the journey to find a new home, Claire and Jamie discuss Brianna and that brings up Frank. Was this the right thing to do in Outlander Season 4, Episode 3?

There has been a lot of discussion about Claire bringing up Frank during the discussion of Brianna with Jamie in Outlander Season 4, Episode 3. Was it right for Claire to bring up her other husband? I actually think it was.

Let’s be honest, no man is going to be happy thinking of someone else raising their child. At least, not a good mad. And Jamie is a good man. Being uncomfortable with the conversation was understandable, but it was also easy to see how the conversation got onto this.

Claire never brought Frank up maliciously. They were discussing Brianna and the things Claire worried about. This was also during a discussion of what she and Jamie would do in their new life; more importantly, what Jamie would do. Would he be happy as a printer?

As they discussed that people in the 18th century would follow their parents and be happy for it, Claire made it clear that things weren’t like that in the future. Brianna had the choice but Claire worried because Brianna had never found her calling. She worried that Brianna would never find the thing she loved the most.

The discussion moved onto history that Brianna adored, but it was likely only linked to her connection to Frank. And as Jamie grew uncomfortable with the conversation, you could also see that Claire wasn’t happy with the knowledge either. In a way, she resents that Brianna and Frank had the chance to grow close, with Frank the one doing most of the child-rearing despite the times.

It’s not often that we see a discussion about Brianna come up between Claire and Jamie. Unfortunately, the stories Claire has to tell aren’t always going to be good ones. There’s going to be mentions of Frank, someone who has a force to follow in Brianna’s life.

If the conversation was done maliciously, I’d not like Claire bringing Frank up at all. However, this was a conversation about Brianna and Frank happened to be in that conversation. It was the right one to have in this moment.
