Outlander lands ReFrame Stamp for Television in honor of gender parity
We all know that Outlander has a lead woman, but what about behind the scenes? Thanks to its gender parity, the series has been honored with the ReFrame Stamp for Television.
STARZ’s Outlander is among the 62 shows to be honored with the ReFrame Stamp for Television. This is to recognize the gender parity within the show both on the screen and behind the scenes. We all know that Caitriona Balfe is our leading lady, but what about behind the scenes?
ReFrame has some strict rules for a show to be awarded. Out of 364 scripted programs between Jun 1, 2017 and May 31, 2018, only 62 shows had people who identified as women in four out of the eight critical production areas. This includes lead characters, season regulars, writers, directors, showrunners, crew members, and department heads.

Outlander covers many of these areas and has from the very beginning. Not only does the show have a female lead (in the form of Caitriona Balfe), but there have been plenty of female season regulars, writers, and EPs. We also can’t forget about the crew. We just have to look at the likes of Maril Davis, Toni Graphia, and Terry Dresbach who have been part of the production from the very beginning.
This is the first time IMDbPro and ReFrame have offered this award and it’s outstanding to see Outlander on the list. Considering the series is based on a novel by Diana Gabaldon — another empowering woman — and the fandom is made up of women of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures, we can be proud of our equality and stance for gender parity.
The time-traveling series joins a number of high profile primetime and streaming shows such as Grey’s Anatomy (and the whole of Shondaland to be honest), The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, GLOW, One Day at a Time, Supergirl, and Jane the Virgin. Other STARZ programs include Sweetbitter, Vida, and The Girlfriend Experience: Bria.
