On this day last year, many of us had either already watched the Outlander Season 3 premiere or we were getting ready for the episode to air live on STARZ. Here’s a look at the impact of the episode for the season.
The Outlander Season 3 premiere aired for the first time this time last year. By this point in the day, many of us had already watched it through the STARZ app. Others were waiting for the episode to air live on the network. It was the first time the show aired on a Sunday night, certainly proving that it was a good night for the series.
As it’s the anniversary of the premiere, it’s a good time to look back at the impact of the episode. Here’s a spotlight on what the episode set up for fans, including expectations for the season.
This was the start of the 20-year separation. It showed us the lives that Claire and Jamie led apart, including how Jamie felt after not dying on the battlefield of Culloden. After already seeing Frank’s reaction to Claire’s return in the Outlander Season 2 finale, this episode started their first year in Boston, leading to the birth of Brianna and the struggle for Claire has she got used to the present day again.

Expectations were high going into this episode and it certainly didn’t disappoint. The Outlander Season 3 premiere remains my favorite of the whole season, especially the moments of Jamie on the battlefield. I love the way the show dealt with showing the battle, with the way memory changes.
The show certainly attempted to show depression and internal anger. Claire was distant and disconnected from those around her. She struggled to make sense of the world she was now in, dealing with the loss of her soul mate. Even if he didn’t die at Culloden (which she fully believed had happened), she knew that he was gone and she was 200 years in the future without him.
This episode certainly set high expectations for the rest of the season, which I felt the first half of the season lived up to well. My only wish was that we got to see more of their time apart, as I’d have loved more on Claire later going through med school.
