Outlander Season 1 premiered four years ago. There are certain lines that stand out more than others and here are my top seven.

It’s hard to believe that four years ago I had friends insisting that I watch Outlander. They’d read the books and knew that this was a show that I would enjoy. After just one episode they were hooked. Well, it may have taken me three years (I became a fan this time last year) but they were certainly right and yes, I was hooked after the Outlander Season 1 premiere.

Some lines from the premiere stand out more than others. I hear them clearly in the characters’ voices. To continue my look back over the series premiere, here are my favorite seven lines.

Like the moment I realized I’d never owned a vase. That I’d never lived any place long enough to justify having such a simple thing.

For the most part, the voice overs annoy me, but I didn’t mind the first bit. This was the introduction to the tale and it would set up the journey to come. This line remains important and poignant since Outlander Season 4 is all about home and family.

Claire has spent 20 years in one place in the third season, but up to that point, she’d bounced from place to place. Maybe she’ll get to have a vase in the fourth season.

Even now, after all the pain and death and heartbreak that followed, I still would make the same choice.

Following on with the voice over part, this line will always stand out. The very first episode foreshadowed everything to come. Even those who haven’t read the books should be prepared for heartbreak and death. We’re warned at this moment, but she’d never give it all up.

Well, the lines, really. Why, exactly, I’m not sure, but I had a very clear memory of this pattern.

Claire’s palms are an important part of the episode. Frank’s line draws attention to that. The lines on her palms are distinctive, and it’s not just Frank who believes that. Mrs. Graham points it out later and both her palms touch the stone to go through time. All this together is why this remains one of my favorite lines from the Outlander Season 1 premiere.

Otherwise known as “Black Jack,” a rather dashing nickname that he probably acquired while he was stationed here in the 1740s.

Oh, if only Frank knew the truth about Black Jack Randall. Sure, he would have acquired it while stationed in the area but it wasn’t a dashing nickname. There’s no way anyone thought of him as a good man, especially not the Scots. However, this line points out the opinions we can gain about people in history just from what’s written down.

You’ll be well advised to tell me exactly who you are and why you are here. Madam, you will find my patience is not infinite.

From the very first meeting, we knew that Jack Randall was nothing like Frank. While the two characters may have been played by the same man. They were opposites. This line made it clear that Jack wasn’t going to wait around to get any answers.

Dougal, I’ve no idea what she might be or who, but I’ll stake my best shot she’s no a w***e.

Murtagh quickly became my favorite side character in this series, which is why I connect to this line. From the very first moment, believed that Claire was just an innocent party in a way. He used common sense to figure out what she wasn’t doing in the woods.

I’ve never heard a woman use such language in my life.

Claire put up a fight against the men and quickly took charge when Jamie was injured. However, it’s Dougal’s line that always makes me laugh. As she continues with the language she would have picked up in the 20th century, especially during the war, the men are shocked. Considering everything Dougal would have seen, I always find it odd that he would be shocked at her language. It goes to show how much has changed.

The interaction after this always amuses me too. I do love Claire’s flowery language when she’s angry.
