Outlander Season 4 will see the arrival of its worst villain yet. Is that really possible after Black Jack Randall?

After the demise of Black Jack Randall, Outlander lost its only villain. Sure, Season 3 attempted to bring one in through Geillis Duncan, but it just wasn’t enough. She was in two episodes of the season as a villain and nothing compared to the man who had taken up that mantle before her. Now Black Jack will get a run for his money in the form of the pirate Stephen Bonnet.

Note: While there are spoilers in this, they’re not from the book. The spoilers are based on an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Is it really possible to have someone worse than Black Jack Randall on Outlander? This means some serious things because years on it’s still hard to get rid of those feelings gained during the last episodes of Season 1. It feels like there’s going to be little help for our leading lady and man.

Sam Heughan admitted that Black Jack is going to be hard to beat, but Ed Speleers is committed to doing it through Bonnet. This is a character that initially seems likable and good, but then it turns out that he’s dastardly and evil deep down. That does make him worse than Black Jack, really; you instantly knew to hate Black Jack, but initially liking a character to be wrong about him leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

"He’s so charming, so you kind of like him, but you find out later down the line that he does some really terrible things. He’s a great new villain.–Sam Heughan"

Showrunner Matt B. Roberts shared that it’s going to be hard to compare the two villains. They’re both hated for their own reasons. While Bonnet is self-serving, he’s also good at fitting in everywhere. He can be whatever someone else wants him to be, as long as it serves him in some way. This is why he’ll be so likable at first.

"He’s also a chameleon. He can act like anybody and fit into any situation, and that’s what makes him so different. You never know what you’re going to get with him.–Matt B. Roberts"

Bonnet is going to be a psychopath and that makes him dangerous. There is nobody that he loves in the world. All he cares about is what will happen to him and how he can come out on top. If you’re expecting to see some attempt at showing a good side to him (as there was that attempt between Black Jack and Alex Randall) that’s not going to happen. Bonnet will never torment himself with actions because he just doesn’t care.
