She signed it Brianna Randall Fraser MacKenzie. The last two names make sense, but it’s the “Randall” part that has caused a stir. Would think not make Lord John Grey think of Black Jack Randall?
Of course, the name is important to us and to Jamie and Claire, but Gabaldon states that Randall wasn’t an uncommon name in the time and Lord John Grey wouldn’t have known him. it’s not like they served in the same company and Grey would have had no reason to know who Jonathan Wolverton Randall was.
Keeping names alive by passing them on as middle names was normal. We just have to look at how Jamie has his mother’s maiden name MacKenzie in his string of names for that. There’s nothing odd about Brianna keeping her own maiden name; the connection to the man who raised her as his own despite everything that had happened. Using the name isn’t about what happened with Jack Randall but a way for Brianna to honor the father who had adopted her.
Wouldn’t John start to question Brianna’s parentage? Well, why? John doesn’t know everything about Claire and Jamie. He could just assume the name Randall is from Claire’s side of the family, knowing she’s English anyway. And John will know Brianna wasn’t in Jamie’s life 20 years earlier, so could assume that this was the name of the man who raised her. That certainly isn’t a lie!
