Who is that being hanged in the Outlander Season 4 promo?
The drop of the Outlander Season 4 promo is certainly going to help us through this stint of Droughtlander. It’s given us a lot of questions to ponder, such as who the guy being hanged is and when it will occur in the season?
Droughtlander has just been made a little easier. Starz dropped a full Outlander Season 4 trailer; the first of what we hope will be many. Not only do we have something to watch to get our Claire and Jamie fix, we also have plenty of questions from it. One of those is who is being hanged in the promo and when will this occur?
While it’s impossible to answer all the questions exactly since I have no connection to the show directly, I can hazard a few guesses and make assumptions. The timing of the hanging is one of the easiest guesses to make.
As usual, there are spoilers in this from “Drums of Autumn.” If you haven’t read the novels and want to be surprised, can I suggest this post on how the showrunners turn the books into the TV show?

Remember that teaser we got at the start of the year? Claire and Jamie were heading through some woods at night and the told the Redcoats that they were returning the body of a hanged friend. This is likely what came before that moment.
In “Drums of Autumn,” we start with the hanging of a friend of Jamie’s from Ardsmuir Prison. In the novel, the character is Gavin Hayes. There was a character called Hayes in Outlander Season 3 and it certainly looks like this same character being hanged during the promo. It looks like the show is sticking with this storyline to a tee.
This is the time that Jamie meets Stephen Bonnet for the first time. The hanging is disrupted by a prisoner making a break for it. That prisoner is Bonnet, who charms his way to getting Jamie and Claire to help him.
Outlander fans may also be happy to hear the story is remaining true to the books as it means a certain saved character from last season isn’t going to meet his maker here. Some fans feared that Hayes would be replaced with Murtagh, although there was hope that Murtagh wasn’t saved just for this. It does leave the question of what Murtagh will do in Outlander Season 4.

Outlander Season 4 premieres in November.
