Will Sam Heughan walk away from Outlander before the series ends?
Outlander has been renewed for a fifth and sixth season, but what about after that? Could Sam Heughan walk away before the series comes to a complete end?
Outlander fans are certainly invested with the story and we’ve fallen in love with Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser. While the series has been renewed for a fifth and sixth series, there’s a part of a recent Men’s Journal article that suggests we may not get the full ending to the story. Well, unless the showrunners change the way they’re adapting the books for the show. Could we lose Sam before the end?
The point of the article was to discuss Sam Heughan’s career, his wishes, and his charity. At one point, Men’s Journal shares that Sam wants to do movies. He’s interested in meaty roles that he can play for two or three months and then move on. Outlander certainly doesn’t give him that chance.

This has left a few fans concerned about the future of the show. After all, there is no Outlander without Jamie and there’s no Jamie without Sam Heughan. This isn’t The Crown and I don’t think many fans would appreciate a recast after the sixth season.
Of course, the article could take a few things out of context. This isn’t a word-for-word interview, creating an article out of a few comments. It also states that Sam will move on “at some point.” That could be when the show comes to a natural conclusion; when he’s seen it through to the very end.
The issue is he wants to take on the role of Romeo in Shakespeare in the Park and Outlander filming could get in the way. Hopefully, it’s possible to give him the chance to reach that dream around his filming schedule for the series. After all, the series won’t want to lose him!
This is the issue with TV shows, especially those based on books. Actors want to leave, whereas characters in books don’t! Fingers cross, Sam Heughan isn’t going anywhere until Jamie and Claire’s story has come to a legitimate end–the ending Diana Gabaldon has in mind.
