Outlander Season 4 filming has wrapped: What’s next for the production?
Filming for Outlander Season 4 may have come to an end, but production is still going. What’s next before they can all think about Season 5?
Outlander Season 4 filming ended yesterday. Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe marked the occasion with an amusing skit on Twitter. However, production isn’t over yet. While Heughan, Balfe, and the others go off on conventions and other projects–and just get a well-deserved break–the rest of the crew are still working.
Editing begins
Matt B. Roberts shared that “Post” is now in session. He means post-production, which involves the graphics editing, piecing the clips filmed together, and getting everything in tip-top shape before the premiere date in November. That’s not going to be easy with a production like Outlander. We’d already got to see some of the graphics work that happens in the series during one of the Season 3 deleted scenes.

This is also the stage where big decisions need to be made. There will be episodes that go over the time allocated by Starz, which means cutting needs to happen. It will be up to the executive producers to figure out which elements can be cut, which should remain, and the bits that are necessary for the fans. This is never easy and it’s caused controversy in the past.
There was a scene in Outlander Season 2 that I would have loved to have seen kept in “Faith.” Then there are a few from Season 3 that book fans would have preferred to remain. Of course, this is the show’s story and not the book’s, so the scenes need to work for the overall season. Everyone has their own opinions, but the TV series is the showrunners’ creation at the end of the day. It’s an adaptation of the books and not everything can be added in.
Season 5 pre-production begins
Outlander Season 4 may only just have wrapped filming, but eyes are already on the fifth season. Matt B. Roberts shared that he was now going through “The Fiery Cross” again, which is the first part of the process of creating the scripts. Writing will start soon!
Locations will also need to be sourced. Fortunately, a lot of the same locations from the fourth season can be used, as Claire and Jamie make a home in the Colonies.
