The Spanish Princess is one of the newest shows ordered by Starz. Could Outlander become its lead-in to encourage more viewers to another period drama?

Starz ordered the followup to The White Princess earlier this year. While it will follow the novel “The Constant Princess” by Philippa Gregory, the series will be called The Spanish Princess. It’s currently in production, which could mean it would be ready by the end of 2018 or the start of 2019. The timing could mean Outlander will act as a lead-in to draw viewers to the new period drama series.

This wouldn’t be the first time Outlander has been used in this sort of way. Due to the loyal and growing following, it would be the perfect show to kickstart a new one, and The Spanish Princess could be perfect.

More from Opinion

There’s already a following for this series, since it’s a follow-up to The White Princess. After the end of that Starz series, fans begged for a second and suggested “The Constant Princess” as the next adaptation. Those requests have now been honored with this new series but while the following for The White Princess was loyal, it was small. Leading in with a bigger series won’t hurt the chances of more success and that can mean more adaptations of Gregory’s novels, set in the just before and during the Tudor period.

The Spanish Princess is also a period drama. While two centuries earlier than Outlander, it’s still a similar enough period to draw in a similar crowd. As mentioned in passing, it’s also a book adaptation, which would work next to another show that is an adaptation of novels.

It’s not like doing this will harm Claire and Jamie’s story. If Outlander is the first show, fans won’t have to put up with the tail end of a show they’re not interested in while waiting for their show to air. Fans can then tune out straight afterward if they don’t want to watch the new series. However, fans may find another show they enjoy to watch to pass the time.
