Why don’t we have an Outlander Season 5 confirmation yet?
Starz and Sony are still in talks, but there’s still no news on Outlander Season 5 and beyond.

At the end of 2017, Outlander showrunner, Ron D. Moore, shared that he was certain that Starz would renew the show for a fifth season. In fact, Sony and Starz have both said they are in discussions about early renewals and those discussions are going well. But fans are still to hear something concrete. While many will admit to believing that Outlander Season 5 is a go, there are still many others questioning the fate of the show.
Considering how well Season 3 did compared to the previous seasons, there are many wondering why Starz and Sony are waiting. Wouldn’t now be a great time to confirm that the fifth season (and maybe even the sixth) is definitely happening?
Fans need some patience right now. While the two companies may be in early talks, there are a lot of other things to discuss. For one, Starz is still trying to deal with the Altice issues, along with partnering with Bell Media to make its way to Canada. The network may even look at other global options to bring Starz further around the world.
Outlander Season 5 isn’t of major importance right now. Not hearing anything for a couple more months won’t cause issues for filming and create a long Droughtlander again. The show is still filming Season 4 and the writers are still working on some of the later scripts. Even if Starz did say that Season 5 was a go, nobody would work on it for a few months yet.
Plus even without the contract negotiations with other companies, this still isn’t the right time. The Grammy’s took place yesterday, so the winners will take the forefront over the next couple of days. The Oscars have recently been announced and that is coming up, so will take up a lot of airtime. And then there’s the 2018 winter Olympics. Announcing a renewal deal will get clouded by other events, except for by Outlander-focused sites like Claire and Jamie. Starz will certainly want to make a big deal about this renewal.
There’s no need to panic just yet. Outlander Season 5 is likely to happen, even though Starz and Sony are still to announce it. The lack of announcement is a good thing, as the negotiations continue and the two companies look for the best time to announce the renewal. Season 3’s ratings were up from Season 2, suggesting more people are hearing about it and tuning in. Plus Starz will know its subscription base from the show, which if the Facebook groups are anything to judge is good (with many canceling when Outlander ends for the season to sign back up at the start of the next season).
