Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan share the future for the Fraser clan in Outlander season 4.
Those who haven’t ready Diana Gabaldon’s fourth book, “Drums of Autumn,” will have plenty of questions about Outlander season 4. One of the big ones is where the Frasers will go next. They landed on the beaches of Georgia, but does that mean they’ll stay there.
Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan have confirmed the future for their characters in the fourth season. Currently filming in Scotland, they’ve not just shared where the Frasers will go, but who they will live next door to.

Claire and Jamie become pioneers
One of the big focuses will be the Colonies. Claire and Jamie washed up on the shores of Georgia, with the shipwrecked Artemis not that far away. It looks like all five main characters will reunite quickly, before deciding their next options. Balfe says that they will decide to head north to North Carolina and will be pioneers in the New World.
They will also live next door to Native Americans, who turn out to be very similar in ways as the Scottish highlanders. Mixed with that and Claire’s knowledge of the future, the two groups of people will become friends and gain mutual respect for one another.
Heughan explains that the similarities between the cultures are both within the warrior focus and the spirituality. Both Scottish pagans and the Native Americans have a connection to the earth, something that surprised Heughan when first looking into the history of America.
This will be an interesting storyline, especially with current political climes and the history of America itself. It will be a chance to explore Native American culture with respect, while showing how relations probably should have been made. However, it will also show some of the difficulties for the two cultures to get along and viewing newcomers with suspicion.
Jamie becomes a Sassenach
Throughout all of Outlander, Jamie has referred to Claire as a Sassenach. She’s an outsider and not just in Scotland. She’s an outsider in time. This season will flip it slightly. While Jamie remains in his own time, he’s going to be in a new country, with new laws, and a new political climate.
One thing that’s exciting is how Jamie adapts. While he can use his knowledge of the time and has Claire to help guide him with the events that have happened, there will be an element of Jamie from season 2 with the outsider approach (thankfully not the PTSD and BJR elements for Jamie’s sake). This will just be on a bigger scales, especially as he and Claire finally have the chance to fully reconnect after 20 years apart.
This is going to be the year they can find a home. Matthew B. Roberts has already shared that “home” is the theme for Outlander season 4 and there are already hints of that now.
