Mr. Willoughby has captured the hearts of Outlander fans around the world.
Very much like Murtagh, Mr. Willoughby has pulled Outlander fans in. His character is vastly different from the books, which has been a positive change for many. However, because of the change, fans now wonder what it will mean for the character in the fourth season.
A word of caution: there are spoilers from “Voyager” in this. If you haven’t read the books, you’ll want to avoid reading on. Reading on means you will have the storyline spoiled for you!
What happens to Mr. Willoughby in the books?
During “Voyager,” it turns out that Mr. Willoughby hasn’t been as loyal to Jamie as readers initially expected. The information about the excise man in the cask of crème de menthe came from the Chinaman, who explained that he felt like his soul and everything he once was had been eaten away by Jamie.

Will Mr. Willoughby have the same ending?
Now book fans are curious. Will Mr. Willoughby have the same ending as he does in the books? It’s certainly possible. While Mr. Willoughby appears to be kind and caring, there is a part of him that longs for everything he once knew.
However, his personality has changed a little. So has Claire’s treatment of him. In the books, Claire is a lot more racist. While she is a little more forward-thinking than the men of the 18th century, her heart isn’t quite as kind as it is in the show. Book Claire is a typical woman raised in the early to mid 20th century.
The show has also been able to make fans fall for Mr. Willoughby. They like having him around, similarly to the way they liked Murtagh and wanted him to survive Culloden. The showrunners have proven they will change a character’s ending once, why not doing it again for Mr. Willoughby in Outlander season 4?
