We head Inside the World of Outlander Season 5, Episode 7. Here’s a breakdown of the big events and decisions that were made.
Maril Davis and Matt B. Roberts take us Inside the World of Outlander Season 5, Episode 7. This time, they’re breaking down some of the big decisions, including bringing back THAT fan-favorite actor.
Let’s start with the death of Murtagh. Duncan Lacroix had a feeling it was coming ahead of the season. I think we all had some sort of feeling that it would happen. And I still appreciate that Murtagh was kept alive at Culloden. Had he died, his death would have mostly been off-screen. Maybe there would have been a flashback, but we would have been told instead of shown.
With the Battle of Alamance and the inclusion of Murtagh, there was more of a familial connection to it all. I felt far more than I ever did in the novel and more than I’ve ever done than reading about the Battle of Alamance. It added another layer, and the addition of the death was just the cherry on top—especially keeping it so much like the memories Jamie has in the novels of Murtagh’s death at Culloden.

Of course, the Inside the World segment didn’t just look at Murtagh’s death. We got a look at the decision for Jamie to put on the red coat. He never actually put it on. He was forced to wear it, which makes much more sense than Jamie choosing to wear this uniform that brings many traumatic memories back.
We know that Jamie wearing a red coat was Sam Heughan’s idea. What we didn’t get to know was anything about the discussion behind the scenes. And now we got to hear that the writers debated whether Jamie would wear the coat or not. It sounds like the writers agree with us. There’s absolutely no way that Jamie would choose to wear it. Glad to hear they agree with us on something.
Finally, we get a touch on Graham McTavish’s appearance. We’ve come to know him as Dougal MacKenzie, and now he’s back to play Dougal’s son, Buck. It was a beautiful and fun Easter egg, and we get to learn how that came about.
What will it mean for the future? Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. Can we just appreciate the appearance?
Something that I noticed in the Inside the World for Outlander Season 5, Episode 7 is a clip of Buck wearing the yellow flower of the militia. This is something I’ll talk about later today!
