Outlander Season 5, Episode 6 may be the most heartbreaking episode of the entire season. At least for now. And now we go Inside the World with the EPs.

When it comes to heartbreak, Outlander always manages to hit the right notes. That was certainly the case in Outlander Season 5, Episode 6. The EPs take us Inside the World of the creation of the Murtagh/Jocasta storyline and the juxtaposition with Claire and Jamie’s love storyline.

Jocasta and Murtagh just aren’t meant to be. We knew early on that Murtagh wasn’t going to replace Duncan Innes in the storyline. Diana Gabaldon made that clear, but it’s understandable that people still questioned it when we saw Murtagh and Jocasta together at the end of Outlander Season 4. The fifth season has shown us why Murtagh and Jocasta just aren’t meant to be.

During the Inside the World, Matt B. Roberts and Maril Davis shared a little about the creation of the storyline. More importantly, they talked about the rehearsals for the end scene; the moment Jocasta shares why she has to follow her head and not her heart. It was important to let that story breathe and get the time needed to tell the full story.

And I certainly appreciate that. If you ever doubted Maria Doyle Kennedy’s acting abilities, you just have to see “Better to Marry Than Burn” to see her at one of her best moments. And that comes from someone who adored her in The Tudors.

While the Murtagh and Jocasta storyline took place, we got a couple that is meant to be. Claire and Jamie’s scenes involved an argument over rings, a card game, Phillip Wylie, and a steamy barn scene. During the Inside the World, the focus was on Jamie’s request of the rings.

Trying to find the big moments from “The Fiery Cross” was never going to be easy. This is one that the writers wanted to include because it shows something we haven’t really seen on Outlander, especially in recent seasons. Claire and Jamie usually had different ways to get the same outcome, but this time, they were both on opposite sides of an argument.

While Jamie wanted revenge against Bonnet, Claire wasn’t sure if it was all that necessary. She wants to get revenge for Brianna, but this wasn’t about that. This was about Jamie’s pride, and she didn’t agree to potentially losing her ring from Frank for the sake of Jamie’s need for revenge.

The Inside the World clips at the end of each episode are extremely important to understand why some scenes were included or the vision that the writers have for the show. In this instance, we find out that the men in the writer’s room side with Claire, while the women didn’t see the big deal of Jamie’s request. Interesting…
