Outlander recap: The time that Jamie found a cat

Jamie finds a cat

If you were wondering when and how Adso would show up, this is when. Outlander Season 5, Episode 5 saw Jamie come across the kitten and take him home. But before that could happen, he had to take a life.

When he gets to Hillsborough, it turns out that the people are happy that the Redcoats are there protecting them from the Regulators. However, he also learns that Governor Tryon is willing to pardon all Regulators except one: Murtagh.

Knox remains on a mission to find Murtagh, and he’s asked for the prisoner records to find out who Murtagh was in Ardsmuir with. Jamie knows that means his own connection to Murtagh will be revealed. He keeps quiet as long as he can, but ends up with no choice but to reveal the truth.

As Knox gets the list of names, Jamie shares that his name will be on there. Well, of course! There will be many James Frasers, Knox tells him. “But only one from Broch Turach,” Jamie points out. Sure enough, Jamie’s name is on that list.

But there’s more. Knox finds out that Murtagh’s surname is Fraser. So, the use of Fitzgibbons was mostly to keep his connection to Jamie safe, it seems. However, Jamie points out that Fitzgibbons was Murtagh’s middle name and Murtagh is his godfather.

Knox knows that he needs to tell Tryon the truth, but Jamie can’t allow that to happen. He strangles Knox to death and then lays him in bed to make it look like Knox had fallen asleep. Jamie then burns the papers from Ardsmuir and opens the flue to the smoke spreads around the room. It would look like Knox died from smoke inhalation.

With that and the cat, Jamie heads back to Fraser’s Ridge. He feels guilty, but he made an oath to his family a long time ago and he’s not going to break it. And yes, Claire loves Adso, named for Jamie’s mother’s cat who looked just the same.
