The most heartbreaking episode of Outlander Season 4 aired on this day last year. The ratings were at a season-high, and here’s a look back at Episode 12.

On Jan. 20, 2019, Outlander Season 4, Episode 12 aired for the first time. It was the penultimate episode of the season, bringing a heartbreaking story for one character in particular. But while the episode was bad for one, it was excellent overall in terms of the ratings.

This was the episode that saw just a glimpse of Claire and Jamie, mostly focused on Brianna and Roger. Personally, I didn’t even realize Claire and Jamie weren’t in that much of the episode because the storylines for Brianna and Roger were so compelling (and necessary) for me.

We saw Brianna face Bonnet, making it clear that he wasn’t going to be remembered in any way after his death. It certainly put the fear of God into him. For Roger, we got a glimpse of the horrors of the Mohawk village, including his sacrifice back to the “idiot hut” as he prevented Father Alexandre suffering from the fire.

In the end, the total audience and demo were both at a season-high. Up 14% in the demo and 0.4% in the total audience, it was a sign that fans were intrigued by Brianna and Roger’s storyline. After all, the promo made it clear that this episode was going to have a strong focus on the two of them. We knew what to expect.

I know you don’t want to work out what the percentages were in terms of actual figures. Outlander Season 4, Episode 12 pulled in 1.270 million viewers with a 0.24 demo rating. While STARZ doesn’t consider the live ratings that much (it’s all based on subscribers due to lack of ads on the channel), it’s still our sign to see how the series is going.

While Season 3 remains to be the best rated season of the series so far, Season 4’s figured don’t mean the series is struggling. In fact, it’s STARZ’s second-highest rated show behind Power, which is coming to an end after the last couple of episodes. Soon, Outlander will be the No. 1 show on air for the network, so it’s going to stick around for a while!
