Outlander has grown considerably since it first premiered in 2014. The show is pulling some of the focus back to the basics for Outlander Season 5.
As the Outlander story has progressed, there are elements from the beginning that we loved but have been overlooked. Or they couldn’t be included because of time and the focus on the bigger picture. Outlander Season 5 is pulling some things back.
Many of the greatest moments throughout the series have come from the first two seasons. The story was much more simplistic, especially in the first season. It was a story of two people meeting each other and falling in love, a story of a woman from another time trying to fit in with life in the past.
The stars of the series did an interview with TV Guide for the Christmas issue, and pulling Season 5 back to the basics has come up. The focus is on the emotional stories, those that can bring us tears of laughter and tears of joy. Think of the likes of Jamie at Wentworth Prison, Claire losing Faith, Claire marrying Jamie to protect her from Black Jack Randall, and even Roger’s decision to head back to the Mohawk village to prevent the priest suffering too much (I count that as one of the basic, emotional stories).
There are certainly plenty of opportunities for these in “The Fiery Cross.” The first part leading up to the wedding continues singular storylines that would make excellent individual episodes. We know the Browns and Isaiah Morton’s storyline will come up because all major players have been cast. We know the Beardsleys will show up.
And there are plenty of hints that a certain traumatic storyline is going to happen. There were a few leaked images, but there’s also a promo photo that suggests something bad is going to happen to one of our favorites.
One of the snippets from the article is of Caitriona Balfe sharing how Claire and Jamie will think about the idea that they could be separated by death. That will affect decisions that they make, which is sure to bring us some of those basic storylines again. After all, death and separation were their main motivations in the very beginning.
I do get a sense of Outlander Season 2 in some of the promotion of the season. With the growing tensions in the Colonies and the buildup to the Revolutionary War, there is a sense of the buildup to Culloden, which further brings that basic storytelling.
This is going to be an exciting season.
