Culloden Battlefield luxury home plans approved in Scotland
It’s a sad time for respect and history. The luxury home development on Culloden Battlefield has been approved. Here are all the details.
It’s not just Outlander fans who will be outraged by this news. Anyone who respects history will be angry to hear that the plans to develop luxury homes on Culloden Battlefield have been approved.
Honestly, I’m not even sure who would want to live in these luxury homes. According to The Scotsman, the plan is to build the luxury homes close to the National Trust for Scotland-owned land, which overlooked the battlefield. Who would even want to overlook a battlefield, knowing the thousands of people who died there?

However, some developers think they will. And sadly, I’m sure there will be many who don’t even know too much about Culloden. I don’t even remember it being taught in school and I researched it years ago (before I knew about Outlander) to learn more myself.
While historians opposed the development, it turns out that whoever bought it threatened to sue if they didn’t get to build on it as planning permission had been approved before the Culloden Muir Conservation Area boundary was set. That lawsuit would be too costly, and instead, Historic Environment Scotland and the National Trust for Scotland chose not to object. However, the housing would need to redevelop an existing building.
The idea is to work on the existing building using traditional materials. Councilors hope that it will make use of a currently unused building. However, there will be a fight from everyone to protect the rest of Culloden Battlefield.
Culloden was an important part of the first two seasons of Outlander and ran into the third. Since the series, it’s seen a large number of visitors, especially around the Fraser headstone.
Outlander Season 5 premieres on Feb. 16 on STARZ.
