Why aren’t Outlander’s Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin at NYCC 2019?
Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin weren’t included on the list of guests at New York Comic-Con 2019. Outlander has officially shared why.
Hoping to learn more about what Brianna and Roger are up to in Outlander Season 5 during New York Comic-Con 2019? Unfortuntely, you won’t be hearing it from the two actors who play the roles. Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin won’t be at NYCC this year, and there’s an excellent reason why.
It’s not a snub toward the two of them. Nor is it a sign that Murtagh, Jocasta, or Lord John Grey’s storylines are going to take screentime from them. It’s all to do with filming.

New York Comic-Con 2019 takes place over the first weekend of October. Season 5 will still be filming at this point, so taking too many of the actors away to promote the show would be a bad idea. However, that doesn’t mean filming can’t go on around it with the right people in the right places.
STARZ has confirmed that Skelton and Rankin are holding down the fort in Scotland. They’ll be busy filming for the fifth season, allowing Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, and others to promote the show in New York. Matt B. Roberts and Toni Graphia are also remaining in Scotland, while Ron D. Moore and Maril Davis are the two EPs at the panel to discuss the fifth season.
Because fans will have questions for Skelton and Rankin, STARZ has asked fans to tweet the questions. This way the actors can answer, hopefully in a short video filmed for the panel and later shared online for all to see.
Skelton and Rankin filming is something I speculated the minute I heard who the panel members would be. Considering filming for the fifth season won’t be finished until closer to the end of the year, it makes sense that some of the core cast will need to remain in Scotland while the others promote the show.
This could suggest that there will be episodes where the focus is just on Brianna and Roger. There were two episodes like this in Season 4, which gained mixed reviews but I certainly enjoyed them.

Outlander will be at NYCC 2019 on Oct. 5 at 5:30 p.m. ET at Madison Square Gardens.
