It won’t be long now before we get to see Tobias Menzies step into the role of Prince Philip. Here’s what he teases about Philip in The Crown Season 3.
Whether you started watching The Crown before Tobias Menzies was cast in the series or not, this is likely a show you’re excited about during Droughtlander. It’s perfect for Outlander fans who want a bit of history and a lot of drama. And there’s plenty in store for Season 3.
Menzies has teased some of what fans can expect during this third season for his character, Prince Philip. Yes, he’s taking over from Doctor Who’s Matt Smith, but won’t let his predecessor phase him. This season isn’t about what’s going on within the marriage but about the external forces that could affect that marriage.

This is the season when Philip’s mother comes to stay. One thing that’s worth remembering is that Philip gave up his own throne (and he did leave the country for his own safety) to marry Elizabeth. When his mother, Princess Alice of Greece, comes to stay with the British Royal Family, things don’t go all that well.
According to Menzies in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, this is “the start of the decline of his relationship with the press.” The drama isn’t just because of the decision to give up the throne, but his mother’s “mental health issues and religious delusions.” Philip’s relationship with his mother wasn’t close due to being “farmed around to extended family members,” and a lot of the past it going to come back home.
As for the moment with the press, Philip is going to try to make his family more press-savvy and outward-facing. He wants to have a good relationship and offer a positive view to the world, but it’s going to go horribly wrong.
Mixed within this, expect Philip’s midlife crisis. There’s going to be a moment that stands out for Outlander fans: the moon landing. Not only is Outlander showrunner Ron D. Moore creating an alternate history series based around this event, but the 1969 moon landing makes an appearance in “Drums of Autumn” with Brianna in 1969.
This moon landing storyline in The Crown Season 3 will see Philip start to question everything that he has achieved and what his purpose is in the world. He’ll start to question the path he chose to take and what could have been.
We all focus on these things in our lives. I think it’s going to make Philip more grounded and relatable as we go through the third season, and the first with this new cast taking over the roles.
It sounds like fans will get more of a connection to Outlander. Menzies’ Philip will gain a bond with his daughter, Anne, played by Erin Doherty. Philip and Anne are very similar to one another, and I get the sense that we’ll feel a little like watching Frank and Brianna, who are very similar.
